THE SAN ANTONIO RIVERWALK
The infamous San Antonio Riverwalk is a stretch of beautifully landscaped
waterfront that is 2 ½ miles long in the very center of downtown San Antonio.
It features many of San Antonio’s most spectacular hotels, restaurants, and night
clubs. It is one of the most dynamic tourist attractions in Texas. It is an amazing
and romantic place to visit, and it also pours almost $800 million a year into
San Antonio’s local economy.
In the beginning it was just a waterway that kept flooding downtown San Antonio.
Then, an architect named Robert Hugman proposed a plan to turn the area into a beautiful
urban park with apartments, dining, shopping, boat rides, and walk ways with
old fashioned street lamps. He wanted one to feel they were walking in Venice,
Italy! He soon convinced city officials and business leaders of the financial benefits
of his plan, and his dream became a reality, and the beautiful riverwalk was
masterfully created into the masterpiece you see today.
